Glossary

Below are definitions of some commonly used high-volume mailing terms:

USPS Terms
Term Definition
APS Acceptance A mail piece that can be processed by the UPS Mail Innovations Automatic Processing System (APS), rather than having to be processed manually.
NDC The Bulk Mail Center (BMC) network has been re-engineered into a new system of Network Distribution Centers (NDCs). This network consolidates the processing of originating mail into fewer sites to increase operational efficiency, decrease cost and maintain excellent service while expanding the surface transportation reach for more products. This change to our BMCs is an internal network change which will not affect the general public.
CASS Certification The CASS system improves the accuracy of carrier route, five-digit ZIP®, ZIP + 4®, and delivery point codes that appear on mailpieces. CASS is offered to all mailers, service bureaus, and software vendors who want to evaluate their address-matching software and improve the quality of their ZIP + 4, CRIS, and five-digit coding accuracy. This process is graded by the United States Postal Service®, National Customer Support Center (NCSC), and the results returned to mailers in order to provide useful diagnostics for correcting deficiencies.
DDU A post office, post office station, or post office branch that has responsibility for the final mail delivery function
Delivery Confirmation A service providing the mailer with information about the date and time an article was delivered and, if delivery was attempted, but not successful, the date and time of the delivery attempt.
Manifested (Postage Paid) Postage is applied to the mail piece and it is ready for induction into the U.S. Postal stream.
MQC MQC Training is a training program developed by the United States Postal Service to train mailers to develop mailpieces that meet the USPS goal of 100 percent automation compatibility. Those who complete the training become certified by the USPS.
RPF A UPS Mail Innovation facility where packages flow for induction into the U.S. Postal Service stream for final delivery.
SCF A postal facility that serves as the processing and distribution center (P&DC) for post offices in a designated geographic area as defined by the first three digits of the ZIP Codes of those offices. Some SCF's serve more than one three-digit ZIP Code range.
